biography

I grew up in the Catskills when dairy farms divided the valleys and slopes of the mountains into geometries of color: hayfields, pastures with cows, and two hundred years of architecture — settlements of stone and wood, from early Dutch dwellings to stoic, white Greek Revival farmhouses. When I was nine, we moved to Cape Cod, where the ocean, salt water, sand, and pine woods became my home. My visual world changed, and New England aesthetics took hold.

I graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1970. I printed briefly at the Experimental Etching Studio in Boston, and then at the DeCordova Museum School with Anne McCrae MacLeod (1972-82), and then spent a year as the Museum graphic designer before moving to Hollis, New Hampshire, in 1976.

McGowan Fine Arts in Concord, NH, represented my work and, through Mary McGowan, numerous corporate commissions came my way, as well as entry in the US Government Art-in-the-Embassies Program. Robert Doty, Director of the Currier Museum of Art, gave me a one-woman exhibition and purchased two prints for the museum collection. He recommended me for a MacDowell Fellowship, followed by an artist's residency at St. Anselm's College in 1988. Post MacDowell, I moved my studio into an old mill complex in Wilton, NH.

In 1990, I moved to Saint James, Long Island, and became Director of Gallery North, a regional not-for-profit gallery in Setauket, NY, from 1992-97. I was a guest curator at the Islip Art Museum, and worked with other Long Island Art Institutions. In 1997, my second husband and I moved to the Hudson Valley. I served as Director of the Rhinebeck Chamber of Commerce until 2004, when I returned to making my work.

Since then, I've studied innovative print techniques and adapted to new, safer materials. Most recently (2015-16), I completed a year's Printmaking Mentorship Program with Joyce Silverstone of the Zea Mays Printmaking Studio in Florence, MA, and have been showing at galleries in New York City, the Hudson Valley, and the Catskills.
